Beautiful Weather for Harrison Fest Parade

Beautiful Weather for Harrison Fest Parade

When the Town of Harrison and the Harrison Fest Committee Inc. moved the Harrison Fest from its originally scheduled date in June because of unexpected overlap with a Red Bull's game, one big concern was what the weather would be like for Harrison's 175th Anniversary Parade.  We can safely say that that concern no longer exists.

The weather for this weekend has highs of 86 degrees and lows of 66 degrees with very low humidity and little chance of rain.  The low humidity will help everyone marching in the parade and the spectators watching along the Parade route up Harrison Avenue from Joseph Supor Boulevard past Town Hall onto 2nd Street.  Viewing of the Parade will be from Patterson Street to 2nd Street.

There are over 40 groups that will be participating.  Elected Official, Marching Bands, traditional dancing groups from various countries, fire departments, police departments including local and county police departments, Veteran Organizations, Harrison Fest Queens, and much more.

Kickoff is at 12 noon.  Assembly is at 11 a.m. on Joseph Supor Boulevard off of Harrison Avenue.

Too Late for Historic Book

The Harrison Fest Committee has removed our Gala Ad Book Order page from our website because you can no longer place an advertisement in the book.  In the next few hours, the Gala book will be finalized in preparation to have the presses rolling to produce the book in time for the 175th Anniversary of Harrison Gala Dinner. We thank all the local merchants and companies who supported the Gala book by taking an advertisement.  The book will see the light of day at the Gala Dinner to be held on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 8 p.m. in the Holy Cross Banquet Hall.

We are featuring one picture here that will appear in the book which we all thought highlighted the importance of Saturday's Harrison Fest Parade down Harrison Avenue.  We honor our past and look to a bright future when a Parade kicks off and goes down Harrison Avenue.

Below is a picture taken from the apartment building on South 3rd and Harrison Avenue looking down toward Town Hall of the 100th Anniversary of Town of Harrison Parade held in 1940.  A lot has changed in 75 years but much has stayed the same.

Portuguese Club Hangs Harrison Fest Banner

The Portuguese American Community Center, Centro Romeu Cascaes, announced its participation in the 175th Anniversary Harrison Fest by hanging a banner and sending out a Newsletter to its membership.  The banner directs folks to the official website of Harrison Fest Committee Inc.  and we thank them for the kind gesture.  The Portuguese aren't the only ones participating in the 175th Anniversary festivities.  We have twenty six different countries represented in our Multi-cultural Parade and Street Fest. Anyone wanting to taste a Portuguese Sardine flown in from Portugal and "barbecued" just right, come to Harrison Fest 2015 and stop by the Patterson Street Basketball courts on the corner of Patterson and Harrison Avenue.  If you aren't a Sardine fan, there is "febras" (pork sandwiches) and Portuguese style barbecue chicken as well.  Bring the family because across the street there will be children carnival rides.  On Harrison Portugal Day folks come from miles around to pick up a dozen Sardines to bring home to family and friends.  There will be tables to sit at so you don't have to trek home before tasting the food.  You might even run into Harrison Mayor James A. Fife who is a huge fan of Portuguese sardines.  Sardines are full of Omegas and Calcium and are one of the world's healthiest foods.  Read more about them at this link. Remember the sardines at the Harrison Fest are not canned but whole sardines, the way they eat them in Portugal.  If you like canned Sardines, you will be floored by the Portuguese Sardine which is too big to fit in a can.  Come early because there is a limited supply of Sardines and when they are finished there aren't anymore until Harrison Portugal Day in June of 2016 and you don't want to wait that long.

Harrison Fest Banner

The Harrison Street Department workers proudly installed the official Harrison Fest banner across Harrison Avenue in front of Town Hall.  The banner is designed to let everyone know "the old school" way that Harrison will be having its 175th Anniversary Celebration Friday, September 18th, Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th.  The three day celebration will include a opening day Mass at Holy Cross Church followed by the Gala Dinner on Friday, September 18th.  On Saturday, September 19th, there will be a Parade down Harrison Avenue from Joseph Supor Boulevard to 2nd Street followed by a Street Fair with merchants including arts and craft merchants, food vendors and multi-cultural music and dancers throughout the day.

The Harrison Fest Committee would like your help in spreading the word about Harrison's 175th Anniversary celebration by posting this News item on your Facebook page.  We are also finalizing our Gala Book and if anyone wants to support the Harrison Fest and go into the history books with this 175th Anniversary book, please visit the Gala Ad Book page by clicking here.

Harrison Fest: Throw Back Thursday

As preparations continue and the Harrison Fest Banners are about to go up to signal that Harrison Fest 2015 is around the corner, the Harrison Fest Committee would like to share a picture from Harrison Fest 2001. The picture was taken in the center of town on the corner of Harrison Avenue and North Frank E. Rodgers Blvd in Harrison (of course).  From Left to Right, Councilman Anselmo Millan, United States Senator Robert Menendez, present day Mayor James A. Fife, Laly DaSilva (co-owner DaSilva Fashions), and the late Mayor Raymond J. McDonough.  There is sadness that Mayor McDonough is no longer physically with us but we know that he will looking down on Harrison Fest 2015 and saying a "job well done."  The picture was taken on Saturday, June 2, 2001.  The forecast was for rain but as the Parade kicked off the sun came out and there was no rain for the entire weekend.

The photo is courtesy of the John M. Pinho photo archive.

Harrison Queen Gala Spectacular

Harrison Queen Gala Spectacular

Harrison Councilman Anselmo Millan, President of the Harrison Fest Committee, envisioned over a year ago a Queen Gala with representation from the various countries representative of the immigrant history of Harrison.  Councilman Millan, in his usual fashion, sought help to make his vision a reality.  The hard work of the volunteers who dedicated weeks to organization, practice, preparation and execution, paid off as the event was a huge success.

If anyone had any doubts as to whether all the hard work would pay off, those doubts were dispelled as soon as Kerlyn Espinal, the Director of Immigration Services from the Office of United States Senator Robert Menendez was announced and took the stage to run the Gala Program.  After a short but meaningful greetings from Mayor James A. Fife and Councilman Anselmo Millan, the Queens took the stage and the room became electrofided.  Was it the beauty of the Queens.  Was it the professionalism of Kerlyn Espinal or her beauty only surpassed by her intelligence and dedication.  Or the prayer she made before she was announced back stage.  All things are possible and a Queen Gala in Harrison New Jersey as part of the Harrison's 175th Anniversary is in the history books.

Social Media is on fire with pictures from the event held in an Auditorium of a building built in the early 1900's with vaulted ceilings and stained glass skylights.  The builders of the building and the auditorium were smiling down upon the venue happy that it had been chosen as the venue for an historic event and celebration. The venue was decorated by volunteers and from the seat cover with hand made bows there was countless hours of man power adding a classic touch.  It would have been easy to go to a venue outside of Harrison but holding it at the Holy Cross Auditorium paid homage to the history of other celebrations and gatherings in the almost 100 years of the buildings existence.  The room looked spectacular.

The buffet dinner representing almost all of the local restaurants either donated or given a reduced price for the event, provided food for all tastes and culture. Brothers Quality Bakery of neighboring Kearny donated a spectacular cake which was cut by Mayor James A. Fife and Councilman Anselmo Millan.  It was sort of a wedding style cutting of the cake and there were plenty of photographers and social media there to capture the moment in time.

There were twenty six Queens representing twenty six countries.  Two of the Queens were unable to make the event due to family emergencies but they will be at the Harrison Fest Parade on Saturday, September 19, 2015.  Here is a list from one of the pages from the event's Program book.

We have put together a Photo Gallery of some of the pictures from the event.  Facebook is also on fire with photographs as it should be.  This was truly a wonderful event and all those who volunteered to make it happen should be proud.

DJShulomixx.com provided on the money music as the Queens were on stage and during the intermissions.  The professionalism was evident as they coordinated with the events volunteers and its master of ceremony Kerlyn Espinal.
